Hypervisor on my laptop (Mobile ESXi lab)

It’s possible to build a basic View 4.0 environment using VMs under VMware Workstation and a lot of people have already discussed the use of VMware Workstation or Player to run ESX in a VM.  I wasn’t happy with either of these solutions mostly because i couldn’t use all of the RAM in my laptop and performance of nested VMs (in order to get PCoIP) isn’t very good.

Update: I have blogged about vSphere 5 under VMware hosted virtualization, for VCP training purposes.

My choice is to run ESXi (part time) on my main laptop and use my shiny new netbook as the client.  These two machines can go in my cabin baggage, along with the other essentials for a five day trip to teach a VMware course.

vCentre services crashes when adding a host

Following on from my disaster with returning a failed disk to the SATA RAID in my lab ESXi hosts (“Mark Online” may cause corruption, should have chosen “Rebuild Disk”), I had the above issue with my vCentre server and reconnecting the resurrected ESXi host.

Why users don’t want a client hypervisor (warning, opinion inside)

At Citrix Synergy last week Citrix talked up their client hypervisor and even released XenClient for you to test.  Rumour has it that the next version of VMware View missed a ship date to wait for VMware’s client hypervisor (I have no inside knowledge and am making up rumours as I go).  Of course Virtual Computer’s nxTop has been a shipping client hypervisor for months. Client virtualisation is the new desktop virtualisation.  It’s being talked of as a great class of product with a big future, but it’s done wrong.
